ABOUT
THE SHOW
Broke as a Joke is a joint presentation of Eureka Entertainment and Alcole Ventures, written and created by Emily Hardy, and produced by Emily Hardy and Allison Coleman. The web series, released as five-minute episodes, tells the stories of starving artists - made even more starving by today's economy. As things get desperate, they have to get creative. Audiences will see themselves in the show's main characters, as they face their challenges with spunk, hope, and humor. "I got the idea for the show as I was watching TV," says series creator and producer Emily Hardy. She was using three remote controls - for her TV, DVD player, and cable box - but only had two working batteries. "Every time I used a different remote, I had to switch batteries! I thought to myself: this is depressing, but it's hilarious!" Knowing she must be just like millions of others - adapting, in ways frightening and funny, to today's economy - Emily set out to write a show "to honor our collective struggle, but also to poke fun at it - because if we can't laugh at our troubles, we can't overcome them." "Emily and I had been wanting to collaborate on a project for a while," says producer Allison Coleman. "When she told me about her idea for Broke as a Joke, I knew we had to make it!" Emily wrote the first five episodes for Broke as a Jokein March 2009. Principal photography for episodes 1 - 5 happened in May and June. We've just launched our promotional trailer and our highly-anticipated pilot episode! Stay tuned for episode 2 coming soon! |
